The Illusion of the Doer

All actions are carried out by the gunas of material nature. But one who is deluded by false ego thinks, "I am the doer."

This is one of the most liberating verses in the Gita. The gunas — the three qualities of nature (sattva/goodness, rajas/passion, tamas/ignorance) — are what actually drive all action. When we falsely believe "I am doing this," we are trapped in the ego (ahamkara). The enlightened person acts fully but knows they are an instrument of something larger. This removes the burden of pride and the sting of failure.
