Gita/Chapter 3/Verse 5
The Yoga of Action · 3.5

No One Can Be Idle

न हि कश्चित्क्षणमपि जातु तिष्ठत्यकर्मकृत् | कार्यते ह्यवशः कर्म सर्वः प्रकृतिजैर्गुणैः ||
na hi kaścit kṣaṇam api jātu tiṣṭhaty akarma-kṛt | kāryate hy avaśaḥ karma sarvaḥ prakṛti-jair guṇaiḥ
Translation

No one can remain inactive even for a moment. Indeed, everyone is helplessly compelled to act by the qualities born of material nature.

Meaning

This verse reveals a profound truth: inaction is an illusion. Even the person who thinks they are doing nothing is breathing, digesting, thinking — acting. The gunas (qualities of nature: sattva, rajas, tamas) always compel us to act. Knowing this, the wise person chooses action consciously rather than being swept along by unconscious forces.
