Gita/Chapter 3/Verse 8
The Yoga of Action · 3.8

Action Over Inaction

नियतं कुरु कर्म त्वं कर्म ज्यायो ह्यकर्मणः | शरीरयात्रापि च ते न प्रसिद्ध्येदकर्मणः ||
niyataṁ kuru karma tvaṁ karma jyāyo hy akarmaṇaḥ | śarīra-yātrāpi ca te na prasiddhyed akarmaṇaḥ
Translation

Perform your prescribed duty, for action is better than inaction. A person cannot even maintain their physical body without work.

Meaning

Krishna gives a direct practical command: act. Specifically, perform your niyata karma — your prescribed, obligatory duty. Not random action, but the action that arises from your role and dharma. Even basic survival requires action. To refuse to act is not transcendence; it is simply delusion. The Gita honors the person who acts rightly over the person who merely retreats from the world.
